A great intensity earthquake of 7.6 magnitude on Richter scale struck off the Andaman and Nicobar islands today, Indian Meteorological Department said.
However, no casualty has been reported so far.
The quake hit the island at 01:26 AM about 265 kms north of Port Blair city, the IMD said.
Tremors were also felt at several places in Chennai.
The residents of Anna Nagar, Mylapore, Besant Nagar and Nungambakkam areas here felt the tremors.
Complaints of cracks in the houses were also received from few places.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 has shaken Tokyo and surrounding areas. No casualties were immediately reported.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a large 7.6 earthquake in the Indian Ocean about 160 miles (257 kilometers) north of Port Blair in India’s Andaman Islands. A tsunami watch is in place for India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh. The USGS cautions that it is not known if such a tsunami has occurred.
The Andaman Islands quake was reported to be 20.6 miles (33.15 kilometers) deep, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The earthquake struck about 225 miles (365 kilometers) south-southwest of Myanmar, 510 miles (825 kilometers) west of Bangkok, and 1,420 miles (2,295 kilometers) southeast of New Delhi, the USGS said.
