Bhuvan counter’s google earth !!
August 14th, 2009
India has launched a counter to Google Earth, search engine’s most popular satellite imagery service which is used for many purposes.
Bhuvan is a online tool which means Earth in Sanskrit , has been developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro).
Bhuvan is a web-based 3D mapping tool which uses images taken over a year by ISRO’s seven remote sensing satellites, including Cartosat-1 and Cartosat-2.
Bhuvan uses a network of Indian satellites to create a high-resolution, bird-eye view of India that is accessible to all at no cost online and will compete with Google Earth from now.
The application allows users to zoom far closer than the aerial view from a chopper which gives us a better view than the google earth.
The satellites can capture images of objects as small as a car on a road. Bhuvan would provide us with images with resolution up to 10 meters. The degree of resolution is based on points of interest and popularity, but most of the Indian terrain is covered upto at least six meters of resolution with the least spatial resolution being 55 meters.
The user can also navigate through 3D viewing environment. One can “fly” wherever thay wish and even draw 3D objects such as placing of expressive 3D models, 3D polygons and boxes. The site also offers tools to measure vertical, horizontal and aerial distances.
