Tata Docomo: Sharing with friends

February 23rd, 2010

Willingly or not, sharing is something that is taken for granted between friends. With the same insight, Tata Docomo has extended its mobile community product, BuddyNet, into the social networking space.

Having started out as a closed user group with various benefits for users within the community, BuddyNet members can now avail of features like sharing talk time, music and free browsing of social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Nimbuzz on their Docomo powered mobile phones. Clearly, an attempt to make the best use of the ever growing popularity of the social networking boom on the Internet.
Social networking is the only practical way friends can stay connected in today’s time-stressed world. For marketers, it is not only an additional media vehicle but also a channel to build rich two way conversations with consumers. The idea of BuddyNet is, in some ways, inspired by the activities of our target group in the social networking world,” says Gurinder Singh Sandhu, head, marketing, Tata Docomo.
n the current phase of the campaign, two television commercials have been created by DraftFCB Ulka. The first TVC shows a young man frantically searching for something in his room. Soon, his friend points to a third friend, who is wearing the boxer shorts he was looking for. Sighing, he kicks his unassuming friend. The ad ends with the product message of sharing talk time on BuddyNet.
he other TVC shows a young man approaching his friends. His friends notice he has a black eye and ask him who gave him one. They roll up their sleeves and head to take on the other person involved in the brawl. Towards the end, all friends are shown with black eyes, indicating they were all beaten up. The message this time is free social networking access on BuddyNet.

The ads have been directed by Nikhil Rao of Chrome Pictures. Vasudha Misra, creative group head, DraftFCB Ulka is the copywriter.

“The brand talks the consumer language. We wanted to show a youthful, zingy way of sharing among friends. It is all about the ‘masti’ and not getting soppy as we explore this nature of friendship,” says KS Chakravarthy, national creative director, DraftFCB Ulka.

Sandhu says that the idea behind the ads was to link the product philosophy with “amplified versions of slice-of-life moments”.

“We wanted the visuals and the message to demonstrate how we at Tata Docomo understand the world of friendship and how our products focus on enriching this world,” he says.

The campaign will continue to focus on the insight of sharing between friends as more services under BuddyNet are revealed.

Sony rolls out first Blu-ray 3D-ready player

February 14th, 2010

Sony is at the forefront of things yet again with the launch of its first Blu-ray 3D-ready player in the market, known as the BDP-S470 for those of you who absolutely love memorizing gizmos by their names. This model is not ready to display Blu-ray 3D content just yet, but it will be able to do so later this summer via a firmware upgrade, and we do believe that this is the same firmware which will enable the Sony PS3 to handle 3D playback over Blu-ray as well. Apart from that, Sony has also made known that its BDP-S570 Blu-ray Disc model and the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570 Blu-ray Disc home theater systems will be able to support Blu-ray 3D as well via their respective firmware updates this summer.

It was at the most recent CES where we were treated to a plethora of 3D TVs, including a live 3D performance by Taylor Swift before being whisked away to Los Angeles to attend another awards show. I digress – all the new models will not only be able to handle 3D playback support, but can also instantly stream movies, videos, music and more from Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, Slacker Internet Radio, Pandora (this Spring), NPR, Sony Pictures, Sony Music, and over 25 total providers through the Sony BRAVIA Internet Video platform as long as you have a decent broadband Internet connection.

Another unique selling point of these new models would appeal to iPhone and iPod touch owners, as long as they decide to control the players thanks to a free app called “BD Remote” which is downloadable via the Apple App store. This app will enable the iPhone or iPod touch to double up as a remote control, letting one access the Blu-ray Disc’s details including jacket artwork, actor, and production information from a highly portable device. All of Sony’s new stand-alone Blu-ray Disc players can start-up from power off in about three seconds, which makes it pretty speedy in comparison to its rivals. The Sony BDP-S470 Blu-ray Disc Player ought to hit the market sometime this month for around $200.

Australia Racism to the core!!

January 21st, 2010

Amid allegations of racism in Australia, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on Thursday said the recent attacks on Indian youths were “regrettable” but insisted that these should be seen in the context of broader incidences of violence against locals and students of other ethnic groups.

“Regrettably, there have been some incidents recently, let’s accept that, but let’s put it into context, and also in the context of, let’s call it, the broader incidences of violence to students of other ethnic backgrounds, acts of violence against Australian students, acts of violence in particular parts of our large cities at any given time of the day,” Rudd told reporters in Adelaide.

“I think it’s important to keep all this into its context,” he said, adding “Obviously these are difficult matters in India, they are difficult matters in Australia.”

Nearly 100 cases of attacks on Indians, mostly students, were reported in Australia in 2009 as against 17 incidents of assaults in 2008.
We are working through them in a practical and effective way over time,” Rudd said. About 100,000 Indians were currently studying in Australia.

“The truth is this: the vast majority of Indian students in Australia are embraced entirely by the Australian community, get on with their business of studying hard, getting their qualifications and going off to do whatever they want to do with their lives,” he added.
Australia should regret about the racial attacks on India. This is not a isolated incident anymore.Nearly 100 cases of attacks on India is not good. Not sure what Australia is doing to stop this. They should start working piratically to stop this kind of inhuman activity by some bad element in society.Indians do embrace the local culture ,we don’t offended anybody. We Indians are peace loving people , not sure why Indians are target.Definitely this is difficult period for Indians leaving in Australia and it will tuff for them to come out free.

Hacked email climate scientists receive death threats

December 8th, 2009

Two of the scientists involved in “Climategate” – the e-mail hacking incident at the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, UK – have been emailed death threats since the contents of their private e-mails were leaked to the world. No further information can be revealed about these particular threats at present because they are currently under investigation with the FBI in the United States.

Many other CRU scientists and their colleagues have received torrents of abusive and threatening e-mails since the leaks first began in mid-November 2009. Tom Wigley, previous Director of CRU and now at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, US, has been horrified by the e-mails he and other colleagues have received. “They are truly stomach-turning and show what sort of venomous monsters we are up against,” he told environmentalresearchweb.

The scandal, dubbed “Climategate”, broke on 19 November this year when hundreds of messages between scientists from CRU and their colleagues around the world were posted onto webshow. Since then, segments of the messages have been used by climate-change sceptics to undermine the scientific case for climate change being caused by humanity’s greenhouse-gas emissions.

In the UK a police investigation is underway to uncover how the material was hacked or leaked. Meanwhile, the University of East Anglia has ordered an independent review into the allegations against CRU and Phil Jones has temporarily stepped down as director of CRU, until the investigations are completed.

Many of the accusations being made by climate-change sceptics are based on fragments and selected phrases from e-mails sent by eminent climate scientists, dating back to 1996. The scientists involved are confident that they can counter all of the claims against them. “None of it affects the science one iota,” said Wigley. “Accusations of data distortion or faking are baseless. I can rebut and explain all of the apparently incriminating e-mails that I have looked at, but it is going to be very time consuming to do so.”

In particular Wigley vigorously denies that any data was ever destroyed. “We did not destroy any primary records,” he said. “All these data came from National Meteorological Services, and the originals are still there for anyone to access. Indeed other groups such as GISS and NOAA have independently accessed these data and independently reproduced our results.”

Climate scientists not caught up in the scandal agree that the independent investigation is necessary, but don’t believe that the CRU science will be discredited or any misdoings uncovered. “CRU is just one of many climate-research institutes that provide the underlying scientific basis for climate policy at national and international levels,” said Dave Reay, a climate scientist at the University of Edinburgh, UK. “The conspiracy theorists may be having a field day, but if they really knew academia they would also know that every published paper and data set is continually put through the wringer by other independent research groups. The information that makes it into the IPCC reports is some of the most rigorously tested and debated in any area of science.”

And some scientists express little surprise at the tactics being used to try and undermine the science. “We have always had a very vocal minority of people who have long since decided to ignore the science and the data and take a deliberately and completely contrarian view, and who have always and constantly accused (all) climate scientists of falsehood and being in it for the money,” said Andy Ridgwell, a climate scientist at the University of Bristol. “They have been playing Chicken Little and claiming the sky is falling in on climate science for a decade. There is nothing left that is new or different that they can (falsely) claim or accuse us of.”

Nonetheless there are now concerns that the e-mail leaks could derail some of the objectives due to be set at the UN climate summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, next week. On Friday 4 December Saudi Arabia’s lead climate negotiator, Mohammad Al-Sabban, told BBC news that the hacked e-mails suggest climate change does not have a human cause, and that he thought it could have a huge impact on agreeing limitations of greenhouse gases at the summit. Meanwhile, Rajendra Pachauri, head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), was reported by the BBC as saying that the claims were serious and needed to be investigated.

For now the scientists involved in the scandal are anxious to get back to doing their research. “We must continue to do the science,” said Wigley. “As time goes by the evidence mounts – it is already overwhelming – and we must continue to report this through normal channels in peer-reviewed scientific journals. We must continue to strive to understand the complexities of the climate system better and to improve climate models so that we better know how to respond to future climate changes.”

But Wigley fears that time may be running out. “As time goes by, however, we are approaching the point where any actions we might take will be inadequate to protect humanity and the planet from dangerous climate change,” he said. “Those people – the hackers, the sceptics, the luddite bloggers – who are hindering and slowing down the process of response will, I hope, eventually be held accountable. They already have much to answer for.”

The Twilight Saga: New Moon record !!

November 22nd, 2009

“The Twilight Saga: New Moon” smashed the record for a single-day opening at the North American box office, and was on track to score one of the biggest weekend tallies of all time, according to preliminary data issued on Saturday.

The vampire romance sequel earned $72.7 million across the United States and Canada on Friday, a figure that includes record-breaking midnight sales of $26.3 million for video torrents, said the film’s closely held distributor Summit Entertainment.

The old record for a single-day opening was $62.2 million, held by last year’s “Batman” sequel “The Dark Knight,” which went on to become the second-biggest grossing movie of all time in North America before accounting for inflation.

Such heights could be difficult for the “Twilight” sequel to attain. Still, industry observers expect it could finish up with upwards of $125 million for the weekend once Saturday sales data and Sunday estimates are issued early on Sunday.

That would place the film at No. 4 in the record books, behind “The Dark Knight” ($158 million), “Spider-Man 3″ ($151 million), and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” ($136 million), and ahead of “Shrek the Third” ($122 million), according to tracking firm Box Office Mojo.

The previous record for midnight sales was held by “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which kicked off its run with $22.2 million in sales in July.

The “New Moon” predecessor, “Twilight,” released exactly a year ago, ended up with $193 million in North America after an opening weekend of $70 million.

The sequel revisits the dangerous romance between high school student Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).

After falling in love with each other in “Twilight,” Bella and Edward break up in “New Moon.” Bella finds solace in her friendship with Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), an American Indian who is also a werewolf. Jacob protects Bella from vampires who kill humans, but she still longs for the gentle blood-sucker Edward who got away.

Meteor shower !!

November 18th, 2009

The Leonid meteor shower, the best views of which were to have been from Asia, was largely obscured by cloud.
The shower was caused by tiny high-speed particles from the tail of Comet 55 P ted murphy, which was last in the vicinity of the Earth in 1998.
Nasa had projected there would be up to 300 meteors raining down every hour.
On a typical night there are about eight per hour. In many of the viewing hotspots, however, hopeful visitors were let down by the weather.
Reports from the Philippines, Nepal and India were of cloudy conditions blocking a view of the night sky.

But there were a few stories of stargazing success.
Up to 1,000 people who camped out in a car park on the outskirts of Bangkok in Thailand spotted 52 meteors over several hours.
One group of amateur astronomers in India at the Siriska wildlife sanctuary, south of New Delhi reported counting 78 during a four-hour period.
“There was no moon in the sky, which is good for observation,” Yogeshwar Kanu Aggarwal, a member of the Space Science Popularization Association of Communications and Educators, told the Associated Press news agency.
“We could see flashes of light for almost 10 seconds as bright as star Sirius.”
North American observers stayed up from the early hours of the morning until dawn on Tuesday 17 November to view the shower’s peak.
